Question: Are any components of this pillow imported from China? Made in Canada does not exclude this possibility.
Answer: Great question! Short answer: No, no components of this pillow are imported from China or other areas of Southeast Asia!
Long answer: Our wool fillings and batting is 100% organic and comes from Argentina. The climate there is very dry, filled with short scrubs and rocks. Because of this climate, no agriculture has ever grown on this land, and so the wool used in the quilting process is shorn from sheep that have grazed only in pastures free from pesticides and herbicides.
The cotton we use is cultivated and hand picked in the traditional co-operative manner that has been followed for centuries in the Cañete and Chincha valleys high in the Peruvian Andes. It is grown organically without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides or defoliants to fertilize the crop, control plant growth or fight pests. It is woven to very high standards into the finest, softest fabrics, in Peru and Belgium.
Please note: ALL materials are certified through GOTS, the strongest independent Organic Certifiers in the World. Hope this helps!
Question: My daughter had an accident on her toddler pillow. It soaked through the pillow, and into the wool pearls. How do we clean it?
Answer: Sorry to hear! Please remove the Damask cover and wash it in cold water and hand to dry. For the inner pillow, the wool cannot be washed or the pillow will become permanently damaged. You can spot clean the surface with 1/3 vinegar and 2/3 water to remove any bacteria.
Once you have spot cleaned the surface, you can lay the inner pillow flat to dry. Indoors only. Once fully dried then bring it outside and expose to UV rays or direct sunlight. Note: Do NOT bring it outside before it is 100% dry, otherwise the wool pearls will clump together.
Also note: The inner wool pillow itself is actually antimicrobial. Any stains or accidents will actually not affect the pillow. By spot cleaning the surface, it is only the aesthetic that we are concerned about. And then by exposing the inner pillow to direct sunlight and/or UV rays, this will help replenish the fibres. Hope this helps!
Question: Is the wool certified organic? why there is no label for this? it is missing the usda label.....by law there should be usda label proof.
Answer: A USDA label is required for organic wool grown in the U.S. Our organic wool is from a sustainable sheep farm in Argentina, and is processed in Canada. We use the G.O.T.S. label (Global Organic Textiles Standard) for our certification.
Question: Whats the smell coming from the pillow? I've aired it out for a few days and it's still there.
Answer: That smell is natural lanolin (sheep) oil. Because the wool fabric is only washed in hot water and soap, (no harsh chemicals are used to strip the fibres) there could still be this smell. It will eventually dissipate.
Question: Can you tell me if the sheep/wool underwent "flea dipping" or the use of chemicals to treat moths, etc?
Answer: Nope, no treatment or chemicals are used in the wool (or on the sheep). Just a hot water bath and natural soap to clean off dirt.
Question: Does a standard size pillow case fit this pillow or is it smaller than that?
Answer: It is smaller. You can put it in a standard size cover and wrap it around, but it really needs a smaller one. We sell one specifically for our toddler pillows here.
Question: What is the pillow case made of? Is it also organic?
Answer: The pillow case is 100% organic cotton sourced from cotton-growing co-operatives in Peru. No chemicals or industrial processes are used when growing and collecting the cotton. The cotton is then woven into fabric in either Peru or Belgium.
Question: Is the toddler wool pillow machine washable?
Answer: NO, the organic wool (any pure, untreated wool) cannot be washed. The wool fibers will swell and uncurl, and turn flat and lumpy when dried. You can sprinkle baking soda on the pillow core to remove odors, then hang in direct sunlight. The UV rays will cleanse the pillow without harming the fibres. The outer cotton cover can be washed on a gentle cycle and hang dry.
Question: Is this pillow case g.o.t.s. certified?
Answer: Yes, it is certified (Global Organic Textile Standard).
Question: Do the wool pearls contain any other material other than wool?
Answer: Nope, just organic wool! We use a special machine to wrap them into comfortable "pearls".
Question: Do you need to use an additional pillow case over the cover? Is the pillow cover soft enough to use as a pillow case by itself?
Answer: Yes, I use another one over top. The cover that comes with it is thick and contoured, and is washable, but I prefer another soft cover over it. (Find a 100% organic cotton pillowcase here)
Question: Where is this organic toddler pillow made?
Answer: The pillow is hand-made in Canada. The rubber is sourced from a plantation from Sri Lanka or Malaysia and manufactured at the source the same day it's harvested to avoid spoilage of the rubber sap (since we use no chemicals in the process to keep the rubber sap stable longer). The rubber is then specially shredded in our Canadian factory and filled in an organic cotton cover.
Question: Is the case zippered so you can remove some of the latex for a less fluffy pillow?
Answer: No, the case is not zippered.
Question: What is the manufacturing process used to create the rubber?
Answer: We use the Dunlop process - this is the most traditional form of manufacturing, and is less energy intensive than the alternative process (Talalay). The rubber sap is whipped into a foam in a centrifuge, then poured into a mold. It is then baked (vulcanized) and hardened by adding 3-6% zinc oxide. Finally, it is washed with hot, soapy water and left to dry before being shipped to our plant in Canada.
Question: Does this pillow case have an envelope closure?
